Hello Kevin.
Thank you for that "ground truth" or "air truth" story about navigating in high latitude. I wonder if it's actually easier in northern Canada today? And I don't mean because of GPS, but the magnetic pole shifted a long way from Canada in the past few decades. I think it's now on the Russian side of the real north pole.
Can you tell me more about how that astro compass works? What input quantities were required to set it? Did it have any kind of clock working inside it to maintain orientation over a flight, or did you have to adjust the time manually now and then? I haven't seen those Canadian tables: "finding the sun's true bearing". Does anyone know if those are still published? And is there a pdf I could download??
