That calculation would have been close tonight. 26 March 2021, Greenwich Reach, local noon 00.06 Greenwich Nautical Time GNT, Sun bears south.
New Moon Mar 13, 22:21GNT. Age of Moon 12.5 days. Moon’s lag = 49x12.5/60 = 10hrs 12.5min.
The Moon should bear south at 10h18.5’ GNT. From ‘Navigator’ Moon at 22h 18.5’ 25th March, or 10h18.5’GNT 26th March, Moon Bears S12°W. However, as there was no wind and only oars for propulsion, they can’t have been far from the convoy. Unless there was good reason for the convoy to be silent, if he had two boat loads of men missing in fog, why wasn’t the Commodore making suitable sound signals. Sound travels a long way in calm conditions at night. DaveP
