Navigation-L Survey a) Dead Reckoning What is the method used most? Computer Program(Name?)--------: Calculator(Name?)--------------: Short Navigation Tables, H.O. 211 etc.(Name?)-------: Standard Navigation Tables, 229, 214 etc.(Name?)-------: HO229 Other(Name?)-------------------: Nautical Almanac c) Plotting How do you do your plotting? Computer Program(Name?)---: Universal Plotting Sheets-: Davis 8.5x11 Maneuvering Board----------: Radar Plotting Sheets-----: Home Made(Describe)-------: d) Navigation Manuals Name your main reference manual-: Bowditch 1975/77 Name a manual/book that helped you the most-: The first class I took used Dutton's _Navigation and Nautical Astronomy_, which was quite dry and a little technical for a casual student. At my father's suggestion (from his Navy days) I tried his copy of Mixter's _Primer of Navigation_ which was a much better starting point. That got the basics under my belt using the HO211 (Ageton) tables. From there I was able to re-approach Dutton and HO229 with better understanding, and then move on to Bowditch. e) Do you use the Nautical Almanac? Commercial-: cheaper and lies flatter USNO-------: -- Peter Smith
