    Navigation Symposium, four weeks away
    From: Frank Reed
    Date: 2017 Oct 7, 19:24 -0700

The schedule of events for the Navigation Symposium, Nov. 3-5, at Mystic Seaport has reached a stable form. Visit fer3.com/mystic2017 to see the schedule of speakers and presentations. There's still plenty of time to sign up. We already have more registrations than any prior navigation weekend conference that we have held. To register for the conference, contact Mystic Seaport’s Registration desk by phoning 860-572-5322, or email reservations.desk@mysticseaport.org. Registration is $100 and covers admission to the museum for the entire weekend plus all on-site events of the conference (excluding food and drink). For general inquiries regarding the conference, contact me directly.

On a personal note, let me remind you all that this is not "my" conference. Yes, I'm doing the legwork organizing it, but I'm not being paid one penny for it, and I am doing this for the benefit of the community of people interested in celestial navigation generally. I don't want to oversell this; I'm just trying to emphasize that it's a big tent ...and I don't own this tent! Also, it's much more than a NavList event. As of now, fewer than one in three registrations are active NavList members. If I count people with any connection to the NavList community at all, then it's about forty percent or so.

You'll notice in the schedule that we're going to hold an event that I am calling NavList Live. It's a one-hour session on Sunday where a panel of experts (defined as anyone present who wants to get in on it) will answer short questions from the Internet. This is a chance to post a photo of a navigation instrument and ask "what is this thing?", for example. Or perhaps a chance to ask whether Moon sights are "really all that tricky". Anything connected with celestial navigation or related topics is welcome, and we will come up with an answer (or answers) live, in a maximum of five minutes per question. Send questions by email to x@fer3.com with NavList Live as the subject. Maximum 160 characters per question plus one optional photo.
