I am pleased to announce that celestial navigation expert George Kaplan, current consultant and former staff navigation expert at the US Naval Observatory, has agreed to attend the Navigation Symposium at Mystic Seaport in early November. He'll be doing two presentations, one on the 100-meter displacement of the zero of longitude from the traditional prime meridian at Greenwich, and another on US Department of Defense policies and philosophy regarding celestial navigation, especially with respect to new automated systems. Both of these fit very nicely with the theme of the conference trying together the history and future of celestial navigation. Many of you know the name George Kaplan well. For a few of you his name may be familiar from recent posts. Andres Ruiz has referenced a couple of his papers just within the past few days, e.g. here. Of course, there are plenty of other presentations happening during the conference (including several by NavList members), and I will have a complete tentative schedule soon, but I wanted to let folks know now that George Kaplan would be attending.
