    Navigation Weekend: 2013
    From: Frank Reed
    Date: 2012 Dec 12, 11:18 -0800

Last summer I suggested we might manage a late 2012 "NavList Navigation Conference" but in the end there wasn't enough time for me to get it organized. I am now, however, committing to organize a conference, which we have called more informally a "Navigation Weekend" in earlier years, for either June or September, 2013. This would be a gathering of navigators, navigation enthusiasts, navigation scholars, and also experts in the history of positional astronomy more generally, with papers and presentations on various topics over a long weekend, most likely from Friday afternoon through Sunday afternoon, as we've done in the past. Previously I've organized these events at Mystic Seaport in Mystic, Connecticut. I have promised in the past that we would try for another venue, though I intend to keep the Mystic option open. Somewhere mid-Atlantic has gotten many votes in the past (DC, Annapolis, any other ideas?). Ideally we're looking for a place that would make an interesting maritime history visit in its own right and preferably an institution interested in partnering with us to make this happen. I need to hear from likely attendees. Where would you like to meet? Do you prefer June or September?

Please also consider this notice as a "call for papers". We need speakers interested in presenting their work on any topic in the subject area of traditional navigation methods, including, but not limited to, celestial navigation, as well as positional astronomy, other methods of position-finding, and related topics in the history of science. These do not need to be academically qualified formal papers. Multimedia presentations, even presentations that are little more than "show and tell" of an interesting instrument or experience would be welcome as a shorter presentation. Please contact me directly at Frank[at]ReedNavigation.com or FrankReed[at]HistoricalAtlas.com to propose a presentation. Please plan on no more than 50 minutes for a presentation. This conference will also be a social event. It's a wonderful opportunity to meet in person members of NavList as well as others interested in our favorite topic.

You may count this message as formal notice. It WILL HAPPEN one way or another.
