The Navy MK V bubble octant can be modified by placing mylar solar film under the index prism and in front of the horizon prism. Reusable Handitak adhesive works good for holding the film in place. Now the (horizon in) index error can be checked using the Sun. Artificial horizons can now be used up to an Hs of 48°.
