I was reading about Amundsen's South Pole expedition, they mentioned that his navigators took some special (learning) course about near-pole CN, that's why I'm interested.

I don't want to post the PDF directly in case it infringes a copyright). In it, in 1944, A R Hinks analyses Amundsen's and Scott/Bowers celestial close to the South Pole. He then replots Bowers results using the 'pole as the AP' method which Hinks put forward in 1909. He was unable to look closely at Amundsen's results, because they were in occupied territory, and Hinks died in 1945. However, it's possible that Amundsen was using the 'pole as the AP' method in any case. DaveP
