I re-posted the CSM press kit, so you should be able to open it as a pdf. There’s a pretty good schematic of how it worked inside. In general, it was more like a nautical sextant than a bubble, in that it measured the angle between two objects, rather than the angle between an object and an artificial horizon. In weightlessness, bubbles don’t float to the top of a bubble cell like they do in gravity, so that type of approach wouldn’t work.
I think it was developed by the Draper Labs at MIT. I know they were heavily involved in the development, if not the actual fabrication.
I agree this stuff is fascinating. CN won’t go out of use until ALL the planets have GPS.
