The purpose of this alignment telescope was to get the Lunar Module from the moon's surface into orbit near the Command Module.
I recall a discussion a few years ago about the use of the space sextant on the Apollo 13 mission to reestablish the alignment of the gyros after the power-saving shutdown. I have a hazy recollection that an accuracy of only about a degree was necessary for that particular function.
