Re quadrants: I was wondering if anyone else remembers 'All silly tabby cats' from secondary school.
Also, from primary school, 12 is divisible by 1,2, 3, 4, 6, and 12, whereas 10 is only divisible by 1, 2, 5, and 10. Then for the 11 plus exam, four farthings = one penny, three pennies = a threepenny bit, six pennies = a six pence piece, 12 pennies = one shilling, 24 pennies = a two shilling piece, 30 pennies =a half-crown piece, 120 pence = four half-crowns= a ten shilling note, 240 pence= a one pound note, and one pound plus one shilling = a golden guinea, ten two shilling pieces equal one pound and eight half-crowns= one pound. Twelve items = one dozen, thirteen items = a baker’s dozen, 144 items = 12 dozen = one gross.
They didn't exactly beat it into us, but by golly we had to practice it every morning, plus lots of mental arithmetic, at least as far as our 12 times table plus squares of numbers up to 20. Well, they had to have us doing something before IT was invented. DaveP DaveP
