    New Book on Sextant Repair
    From: Tom Sult

For those of you who may be interested in repair and restoration of sextants, you will want to look at this site: http://sextantbook.com/. In the blog area there are lots of well illustrated repair jobs (including my sextant). In addition, there is an extremely helpful website owner as I will illustrate. I have a SNO-t sextant that had corrosion on all of the mirror adjustment screws. Some I was able to loosen and refit without incident. But two on the horizon mirror I was unable to budge. I had been using the sextant for some time with a significant off scale error which was drifting worse. I made another attempt at fixing the problem and frankly make a big mess out of it… lets just say it involved a dremel, very soft metal and a ham-fisted moron. I thought I had completely destroyed the horizon mirror bracket. I put out an SOS on NavList and got a response form Bill Morris. He essentially rebuilt the bracket. Take a look: http://sextantbook.com/category/interesting-overhaul-problems/. I don’t think he is interested in being flooded with repair jobs (he was a bit growly when I tried to pay him, saying he does not accept reward for repair of sextants), but he does have a new book coming out that will be an illustrated book on the care, feeding and repair of sextants (see above website). That is something I think many of us on NavList may be interested in.
    Tom Sult
