The following URL points to a recent New York Times article that may be of
some interest to the list. It also seems to connect with the ongoing thread
regarding 'fluxgate compass' technology. I became aware of this item
because of my casual, low level interest in astronomy.

I could envision technology in this device serving as an important element
in future sextant development (which is not very likely to happen of course).
I once owned one of the little Autohelm handheld fluxgate compasses. It
had a major drawback requiring the compass to be level during
measurement periods. I believe newer designs include additional sensor
circuits to compensate for leveling errors. I gave up on the this thing after a
few trials since the data repeatability was poor. My little hockey puck was
always correct?. The Autohelm was also capable of measuring the earth's
vertical magnetic component too but I never considered this to be of value
to me. Now where did I toss it?
Anyone know about the gravity sensing element in auto airbag systems?
I did notice a few annoying pop-ups when I accessed the above referenced
URL. At least I provide a warning, deleted them!
