John You failed to mention John P. Holland's "first" submarine, circa 1878. http://www.navy.mil/navydata/cno/n87/usw/issue_19/holland.htm http://whatexitnj.com/?p=349 http://www.hmdb.org/marker.asp?marker=49864 My father's family home was located on Preakness Ave. in Paterson, NJ which bordered on West Side Park. In the park, near the Passaic River, the submarine (I believe the original, not a copy) resided after being raised in 1927 (sunk in 1878). Spent many happy hours playing on it in my youth. (Apparently the guidance system was top secret and removed before display ;-) According to the internet, the sub now resides in a Paterson museum.
