My post this New Years Eve at 1705hrs is regarding the next GGR in 2022!
The infamous race of 1968 is also recounted at GoldenGlobeRace.com, but as the race remains a single-handed feat of strength and stamina we should be reminded of the race's most infamous participant in 1968-9 The name of Donald Crowhurst stands as a testimony to tenacity as well as charlatanism in a sport as noble as sailing single handed around the world as Sir Francis Chichester did.
The website is www.goldengloberace.com and there are good wikipedia entries on both the 1968 GGR and on Donald Crowhurst, as well as the winner of that race Robin Knox-Johnston, as well as Bernard Moitessier -- one anti-hero and two real heroes among the nine who started the race with four of the nine dropping out prior to leaving the south Atlantic.
I am headed down to the Atlantic Coast this New Years Eve and will spend it walking the beach and of one day sailing that ocean over to England.
