For those that are interested in the history of nautical instruments:
Nicolàs de Hilster just published his PhD thesis on early wooden navigational instruments – „Navigation On Wood: Wooden Navigational Instruments 1590 – 1731“, Castricum 2018. This will be the definite work on angle measuring instruments prior to the octant and the sextant for a long time. His study originated from a contact with the late Peter Ifland as is told in his introduction. The book has more than 800 pages, is cloth bound and costs a moderate 25 € plus shipping – a bargain in my opinion. You can obtain more information - including how to order it - on Nicolàs‘ homepage:

Another book recently published is Richard Dunn’s „Navigational Instruments“, Oxford 2016. This is an overview (80 pages) richly illustrated with (mostly) objects from the NMM Greenwich, so there is a visible UK bias.
