I did a little digging online last night after my initial post about observing satellites and found a nice slide presentation by George Kaplan (USNO) on "Automating Celestial Navigation" which includes numerous references to position-finding by visual satellite observation as well as some background on determining the vertical. Plenty of interesting ideas here though only hinted at since these are just the visual slides for a live presentation. Myself, I have been publicizing this idea since 2006, I think, and I did my first public presentation on the topic at Mystic Seaport in 2008, if I remember correctly. As I noted in my first post, it doesn't much interest traditional navigators for a variety of reasons...
