    Ah yes, the old bunyip-on-a-board trick. :-) Ingenious. I've put a
    couple of drops of red food coloring in the ends of the tube for
    relatively long-distance single-handed use. I used it once to find the
    height of the scope's objective lens center relative to spot due south
    atop a neighbor's privacy fence from a permanent vantage point to do
    meridian passage sights. So far have not laid out out the base for
    pyramids with a water and a trench....
    
    I like the idea of plastic balls that float. May I ask what you used for
