Pete,
I have gone low teck to make my AH. On a camera tripod I mounted a board, horzontal, and put a clear plastic tube filled with water in a "U" shape. Into the two ends I put a bright blue plastic balls. The board is adjusted to be eye height. Stepping back about 10 feet I can line up my sextant with the two balls and that becomes my horizon.
I find that it works well. I live in Nebraska so not near big water.
