Peter,
As I noted in my last, I have never tried taking a sight under the sorts
of conditions that we are discussing, so it is all theory to me.
However, the irradiation effect is obvious enough in other
circumstances. Its ability to raise a false horizon above the real one
is described in at least one usually-authoritative text: Bauer deals
with it at some length on pp.111-114 of "The Sextant Handbook" (2nd
edition).
