    Sam,

    The attached USNO calculation has your observation at 28.2' toward from the given assumed position. The most likely error here is that you read the sextant 1° too high which is easy to due. If this LAN observation is worked out for the artifical horizon sextant reading of 118° 30' then your LAN Latitude will be close to the actual Latitude.

    Hs 59° 12.4'

    Dec 10° 57.2' N

    90° - 48° 15.2' = Latitude 41° 44.8' (close to assumed Lat of 41° 43.5'N)

    Give it another try when you have a chance.
