You could always ring up Clyde River Airport and ask them what the locals do http://clyderiver.ca/directory/air-transportation-services/first-air .  I think it might rather depend upon where you were near, how you were travelling, and how much manoeuvring you were intending to do.  There are often significant changes in variation due to minerals in the ground in some areas of Canada, which would be most noticeable close to the surface.  Also, if you were manoeuvring and not following a steady course, northerly turning error might be more of a problem than at lower latitudes.  You would definitely need to be aware of variation, because not only will there be quite large changes along your route, but you will need the most up to date values, because it’s changing relatively quickly at the moment.
