Thank you Wolfgang. I knew carting that great big heavy book all the way from Kensington Gore to Waddington would pay off one day. The only thing standard that I can see is that the ‘Gerat’ (device) is always 616-42A. What’s written against Anforerz, which seems to translate as ‘Batch Number’ is either SKS 42, KS 3D, or SKS 3D. One thing is certain. There is never a S 30. Interestingly on page 236, the two sextants are described as 2Ds when the photograph clearly shows 3D written on their number plates. Why would they write the name?, SKS 3D, in the Batch Number box, or does Anforerz not mean Batch Number? DaveP
The Jerchow book, from which the Knierim page takes the text, also has "KS 30" in the German and English version. But that seems to be a misreading indeed: if you look closely at the pictures in Willem Mörzer Bruijns' "Sextants at Greenwich" ( pages 233-237) you can see that it is really a "D" - the left side of the figure is flat, not round.
