I just finished Blue at the Mizzen and was disappointed. I had the feeling
that O'Brian was not a sailor (which he was not), and his descriptions of
maneuvering an unpowered ship were nave.

He describes one ship dead in the doldrums while another approaches it
(how?). The two ships then move in tandem (with no wind!). No sailor would
    write like this.
