Come on Alex, do I quibble about your 0.0 error averages with 1.0 SD's ;-) Of course you have the excuse that your sextant only reads to 1!0. What can I say? Sometimes I am happy to have one in the win column, even it was not a pretty win.> I never did much IC from the horizon (because I rarely see the > horizon in my life), but I noticed that sometimes my > IC from stars differs from IC from Sun > (taken on the same day, and then again next day). > I am speaking of differences of 0.3', sometimes up to 0.6' > In these cases I trust the IC from Sun, > because a) the books recommend it and > b) my Sun observations seem more consistent than star observations. I too trust the sun IC's over the stars. I am very bad at star IC's. I am not clear that sun IC's are preferred over natural horizon checks in my texts. My interpretation is that sun IC's are am alternative method, especially suited for those of us that are landlocked.
