The youngest of my vols 1, 2, and 3 is ‘Fourth Impression 1942’.  I thought I’d try Googling Whapham (the name inside the cover), Navigator, RAF.   I might have the wrong chap, but Alan Owen Whapham was promoted to Pilot Officer (Navigator) on 13th Apr 1942  http://digital.nls.uk/british-military-lists/pageturner.cfm?id=96255594&mode=transcription .  The poor chap only survived a further 16 months.  See http://www.kingscollections.org/warmemorials/kings-college/memorials/whapham-alan-owen .  He died on 24th Aug 1943 while engaged in an act of air/sea rescue http://100548.activeboard.com/t52268498/218-squadron-august-1943/?page=1 , second letter, second paragraph.  DaveP
