I can think of at least one Android app that does what you describe. It is called StarStruck Navigation. The Help says it is only good to 1º, which, IMHO, is a stretch. And, if doing a sight on the sun, your best bet, if you don't have some kind of filter, is to use the shadow of the phone/tablet.

Hi All,
I'm not sure if this will be sacrilege in this forum, but I'm curious: has anyone heard of using an android tablet or phone to make a sight for the purposes of determining your position? In this case, the device would be used like a sextant, reliant on it's internal sensors to determine altitude. If anyone is away of software that might be available for this sort of thing, I would love to discuss.
