Geoff, in the 50's it might have well been sperm whale oil. My friend even has a
small bottle with a vintage Singer sewing machine, it was the premium choice. A
modern premium oil sold for watchmakers and cameras, etc., would probably be a
good choice. That's something most of us would have to buy mail order and not
available locally. Personally I've used Krytox oil and grease (each as
appropriate) which is also hard to come by, and damned expensive. On the other
hand, it is DuPont's premium "son of Teflon" product which should be unchanged
by acids, oils, alkalis, oxygen, chlorine, and other environmental factors
including a temperature range of something like -70 to +600F. I use it for
things that I want to lube once--and not again for a very long time.<G>
