The New York Times has recently digitized all of their issues since
the first on Oct 18, 1851. You can search the text, but the early
files are all delivered as images in PDFs. Everything in the 1800s is
free, and somewhere in the early 1900s you must begin paying for the
content.
I have found that there is a lot of interesting "ship traffic" news in
the early issues.
Just go to:
and next to the search box select "NYT Archive 1851-1980" in the drop
down menu.
