I saw a show on TV once about celnav. They started with a camper parked on a road in Minnesota pointed south. They then sighted along the side of the truck up to a star on the meridian and drew a line on the side of the camper showing the angle of the star above the horizon. They then got in the camper and drove south to Louisana and agin parked it on a south bound road. They waited for the same star to align with the road and again drew a line on the side of the camper showing how much higher the star appeared from there. Very simple and easy to remember. 

Then you have to start with the noon sight since the triangle colapses into a line, slice the earth in half along the meridian to illustrate what we saw on the side of the camper. Then to go into more detail you might like to see how i explaned it  it to a group crossing the atlantic:
