Re: A One-Hour Presentation on Celestial Navigation

    Bob,

A one hour celestial navigation introduction lecture should be enough time to explain and demonstraight latitude sailing, latitude by noon observation of the Sun (LAN), latitude by Polaris observation, and a bit of history. Longitude by equal altitudes of the Sun might be best saved for a second one hour follow-up lecture. The Davis MK 3 sextant would be my choice as the most affordable good enough starter sextant for the novice.

I have been invited to give a one-hour presentation on celestial navigation.  The people asking me are no more specific than that in their agenda.

The audience will be 30 sailors, of whom 3 or 4 will have had opportunities to sail offshore before - though none of them will have ever used sextant.  The balance of the room will be coastal sailors (a few of whom own boats; the majority will charter), who *dream* of someday sailing offshore.

I have given people 30-second descriptions of celestial navigation.  I have instructed a 15 hour course in celestial, that included an 12 hour extension for those who wanted to write the Sail Canada exam.

What I have NOT done is anything in between.  I would appreciate counsel on what to do with an hour-long presentation.

Thanks so much for your help!

    Bob
