The tecepe NA lists GHA of sun. Interpelate to find time GHA = 0. Thats Meridian passage at Greenwich. Take for two successive days surrounding time when you are interested in, and use your longitude to interpret for Meridian passage at your longitude ( this step may be superflous but it won't hurt)
Do not use a mercury artificial horizon. This is dangerous and unnessary. Work with water and sun sights. (Do you really want to go outside in the winter?) Another alternative is to mount a mirror on a tripod in a horizontal plane. Common level will assist. I have had good accuracy this way but have not done a through study of accuracy you can expect.
