May I respectfully disagree?
I'd like to make an argument for ISO 8601. I'm not going to claim that it's widely used (although I think it is); instead, I want to comment on your "alternate reality" comment. First, though, I want to say something about myself. I like the metric system. I use a dvorak keyboard. I run barefoot. AND... I'm a fan of celestial navigation. So I guess I would say this: sure, standards geeks are part of an alternate reality. But... so are most modern celestial navigators! I would argue that we're actually part of the *same* alternate reality.
None of this is to denigrate the extraordinary work you've put into your websites and mobile Apps (I'm a proud purchaser!). And of course, what date formats you include are 100% up to you.
