As promised. It was cold in the roof, so I didn’t look for long. However, found some photographs of a MkIXA chamber unit which I took a few years ago instead. The filler is at the bottom left. I don’t know if the brass/copper head was ever meant to come apart from the aluminium tube, but most people talk as if everything is done through the hole sealed with solder right at the end. It’s a bit like changing a car engine by going up through the exhaust pipe. The modern way is to tap a thread in the top of the end cap so that you can put a small screw in. You can see I tried to separate the end cap from the aluminium tube to no avail.
I filled my A12 with white spirit. It smells less and it evaporates away more slowly. As I only use my sextants for fun shots, I feel I can use pretty much what I like in them. DaveP
