Aha. No aerial refueling. That complicates life. The map in the article you linked says it all (copied below): a careful plan of high-latitude hopping... Lindbergh should have done that. Oh, but I suppose no airport in Greenland in 1927! :)
I have no guess on your other questions, but they're not really navigation-related so I won't try... Anybody else?
