While traveling, I had the good fortune to visit the International Maritime Museum in Hamburg, Germany. The collection covers commercial shipping, offshore, work boats, cruise, military and sub-sea exploration. There are probably in excess of a thousand ship models. Smaller focus exhibits detail navigation instruments, famous explorations, shipbuilding and shipbreaking. The venu is a wonderful restoration of a Hansetic League storage wharehouse - 8 levels or 'Decks' - in the urban renewal Hansa City waterfront district of Hamburg. This museum is a must-see if you are in Germany.
Within the navigation instruments exhibits, there is one device that caught my attention and it's related to sextants. I think the device is an optical bench of some sort, perhaps to measure a sextant's arc errors. I'm guessing. These errors are typically listed in the sextant's protective storage box. There was no accompaning text explaining what the device is and it's position in the exhibit makes it hard to get a good overall view of picture.
Perhaps some NavLister will recognize the device and comment.
