That's what I figured out too. I was originally surprised that I have no problem covering distant object during the day when I tested my contraption, but at night the star seems to shine right through the match. The difference here is that pupils are dilated at night and become wider than match.
Peter, can you provide more information on that pre-telescope trick reference? It is exactly a quadrant that I am trying to build and making an accurate pointer and plumb line escapes me so far, I can use all the tips I can get. (Grids and scales of a quadrant are easy part, due to the magic of laser printers)
