Here is a photo of two soldiers with prototypes of two "manpack" early GPS receivers. The impact of the dramatic miniaturization of electronics can not be overemphasized. I remember when the first handheld GPS receiver came out in the early 1990s. Yes, handheld, but SLOW -- received one satellite at a time. Today a single 1 x 2 cm silicon chip can receive and process signals from ail visible satellites (up to 12 of them) simultaneously.
