Peter you wrote: Well, it turns out you don't want to go north, because you'll bend over backwards. Instead I tried going south to the south celestial pole, which worked reasonably well, and also had the advantage that I wasn't biased by a visible Polaris. My cheesy estimate for south was 8 degrees to the right of Rigel's azimuth at the time, and this turned out to be right to within 2 degrees. Might have been just luck.
Peter. I’ve gone off the tail pointing to south on the observers horizon idea although it would have been pointing towards the Sout Pole. As you say, it might just have been luck. What was your lat and long, and what was the approximate time in UTC of your observation? DaveP
