    Even better than that is HO 249 volume 1 . It gives you the actual Hc and AZ and indicates which three stars are best positioned for a three star fix. Using flight navigation procedures you can do the actual computations in advance.  So one entry into this volume and you are done.

    Sam,

    The better tool for star sight planning is the 2102-D starfinder. The starfinder is set to LHA Aries for time of twilight and gives the approximate altitudes and azimuths of available navigational stars to preset the sextant. The USNO star chart (PDF attached) could be used for determining star meridian passage but not good for selecting a perfect round of stars (azimuths 120° apart).

    I've found the USNO Navigational Star Chart to be very helpful in planning star shots but am wondering if it the chart can be used for other purposes such as;

    - determining GHA Aries for when a body will be at a certain altitude

    I've tried putting a parallel rules across on a diagonal so that they touch 180 and 360 (or 0 and 180) and moving them around to obtain a fairly close GHA Aries can be used for, say, when Sirius is just on the horizon (converting to LHA).

    I'm probably doing something wrong.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,

    Sam L.
