Hi Francis,
I agree that the Aubrey/Maturin novels have a wonderful style to them. And I'm sure nitpicking about the celestial navigation does the author no dishonor (or not much). On the contrary, it's like finding a minor inconsistency in Tolkien---they're almost inevitable in a large work, and they can sometimes help to understand the story better.
The Hornblower books were nice (who can forget the trip up the Thames?) but perhaps didn't have the same depth.
