    Re: Patrick O'Brian series

Jackson, I have read the series through several times and now regularly listen to a handful of favorites on tape (Tull narr.). There are a couple of times when Jack catches a sight of Jupiter on a dark and stormy night and I've wondered (no mention of moon) about a horizon. But O'Brian's narrative line is usually so compelling that by the time I wonder, it's gone by. I no longer have the books, so finding those spots would be too tedious for me. There are lots of guys here who have probably dealt with this and there may well be threads galore.

Patrick O'Brian's historical novels (the Aubrey-Maturin series) contain occasional references to navigation in the Royal Navy in the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

Has a member of NavList examined these books to determine whether O'Brian's portrayal of navigation is historically and technically correct?

Some years ago, I read the twenty novels in this series as well as the unfinished twenty-first manuscript, but, at that time, I did not pay sufficient attention to how O'Brien described navigation.
