Came across this rather interesting piece on an online auction lot, and am trying to figure out the purpose of this instrument.
The thing resembles a typical pocket "box" sextant and the seller also claims to be one. But it still has some distinctive features that are not seen on a standard box sextant. For instance, it has a round mirror fitted to an outstreching arm. The main dial ranges from exactly zero to 180 degrees with only two notches inscribed between each tens of degrees, therefore the minimum graduation on the main scale is 5 degrees. There is no presence of a vernier or micrometer drum on the sextant.
