I think the problem here is what 'utility' means. Frank has for years promoted Lunars as enriching maritime history and just plane challenging fun for todays navigator. And I could not agree more.
If you mine NavList archives, he has posted almost 200 pages of notes on clearance technique, 19th century navigation practice and other historic tie-ins. These posts and those of others on lunars are an amazing and unique resource.
Attached is a quick take summary of Why Lunars Today. Most of the points are not mine, sources attributed. Far more can be said on lunar's utility today but I wanted to respond to this thread now and Ken's comments yesterday.
