Roger,
In the Heart of the Sea is an excellent read. Lunars wouldn't have helped. Latitude sailing is actually good enough to reach the desired land or island. The fatal mistake by Capt. Pollard was to not go for the nearest islands because of a false fear of polynesian cannibalism in the region. The great irony was that ultimately lots had to be drawn to determine who would have to be sacrificed to become food for the others. A very cruel lifeboat practice at the time.
