Brad,
You are right, I see now what you mean. I naively assumed that the glass is not visible because of its recess and the perpendicular angle at which we look at it.
Another big concern is always the graduation of the silver inlay. And a close up of the one in question is conspicuously absent.
I have a Plath with vernier, the graduation of which is completely worn near 0. I would love to have it restored, because the sextant is otherwise in good shape, but there is nobody here in New England that does this kind of work (or did it 10 years ago, when I stopped asking).
