thanks for your very interesting contribution. These early navigation topics are amazing and ingenious.
I came across Nicholas Brion's digital edition website https://www.c82.net/math-instruments/book1-additions-chapter6. It features the digital editon of his 1709 "treatise on the construction and principal use of mathematical instruments", a.o. covering the construction and use of plane scales. I noticed that you also referenced Bion in a publication about plane scales, though through a different source.
The plane scale topic is part of this treatise, but there are many other interesting topics described by Brion in this digital edition, e.g. about "modern intruments used at sea", such as the quadrant and octant...
