Glen, Honestly, I think you lucked out by missing the chance to buy it. Looking at the scratches on the sextant and noting the missing eye-cup, I will bet that the bubble was dry and that it would have required more than a bit of fixing up to making it sight-ready. And even though that version of the Plath sextant was the best-designed one they made, it still would have been a hassle to use.
I am perhaps the least experienced member of this group, but I became an accidental collector and while I love, love, love the old sextants, when it comes to actually taking sights with one, I'll stick with the newer ones. Your Astras are def the right way to go!
Re AHs, my advice is to keep an eye out for a C&P AH, or one of those neat bubble sextant conversions that Bill Morris used to make.
