"The issue with the batteries does not make sense. My C. Plath takes regular AA batteries. The base of the battery compartment has the typical conical spring arrangement that would compensate for any difference in battery length. It was made in 1962 and I doubt they changed much in that area.

I don't know why they would say to solder but......
My C. Plath has the conical spring arrangement as well. It holds 2 AA batteries quite nicely. However at this time I have not fixed the light yet. The spring could also be stretched if it were to become compressed. I do not know the year of the sextant (I have been trying to find out) but the serial number is 57469 if it helps.
If you are looking for a C.Plath I found mine on ebay for $325.00 US. I did have to do some repairs as it was inoperable when I recieved it. About $10.00 US at the local hardware store (not counting tools) fixed it. It works beautifully now. I hope this helps.
