Francis/Bob,
I am another one who had a teacher at school who was of little help when it came to teaching trig or anything else for that matter.
I can recall standing in front of a blackboard, chalk in hand, with absolutely no idea where to go next and this maths teacher saying to me. " Atkins it is people like you is the reason trams still have bells."
That comment has stuck with me all these years though I did soon after find a great teacher who took me out of the class room and demonstrated in a practical manner as to how all these mathematical mysteries could actually be utilised.
